  • Selection of right variety as per quality needs and agro-climatic conditions of the location.
  • Always plant vegetative propagated plants as these plants have short juvenile period and starts bearing early with true to type fruit quality.
  • Dig 1x1x1 m size pit.
  • Keep proper planting distance as per variety.

Non hazardous phytohormone for fruit ripening

The ethylene is phytohormone which is in gas form and synthesized in fruits to ripe the fruits. The fruits are classified into two groups based on ethylene synthesis in the fruits. First group of fruits are called climacteric fruits in which ethylene synthesis increases at maturity and fruits ripe after harvesting at maturity such as mango, banana, apple and tomato. In second group of fruits ethylene synthesis does not increases at maturity and fruits do not ripe after harvesting if harvested even at maturity, these fruits are called non-climacteric fruits. Ethylene is natural hormone for ripening of fruits and synthesized into both climacteric and non-climacteric fruits but synthesis increases in climacteric fruits at maturity. The ethrel or ethephon is applied externally as source of ethylene to enhance the fruit ripening of climacteric fruits. The ethephon releases the ethylene gas around the fruits. The ethylene is non hazardous and recommended for fruit ripening.
The another chemical calcium carbide is used for ripening of fruits which is harmful for the health and not recommended for fruit ripening. The Calcium carbide burns at high temperature in the presence of oxygen and used in gas welding works. It reacts with water and releases acetylene gas which burning gives as high as 3000 degree Celsius temperature. The acetylene is hazardous and not a fruit ripening hormone and its use for fruit ripening is punishable offense in India.

Kinnow Introduction in India

Kinnow is a hybrid between King (Citrus nobilis) and Willow leaf (Citrus deliciosa) mandarins developed in 1915 by Dr. H.B. Frost at  University Of California USA. After a long evaluation period of 20 years it was released in 1935 as new variety for its commercial cultivation. The fruit  character of kinnow ranges  between mandrin  and sweet Orange by being neither loose nor  tight skin.

It was brought to India at Regional Fruit Research Station Abohar of Punjab Agriculture University by Dr.  J.C. Bakhshi from California. Initially four plants were maintained at Regional Fruit Research Station Abohar. After evaluation of its  performance at Abohar it was  recommended for commercial cultivation since then it has emerged number one fruit both in area and production and has brought Golden revolution in the Punjab State. Now it is popular in India.

Choice of intercrops and intercropping in pre bearing and bearing orchard

The selection of crops for intercropping in fruit orchards depends upon several factors but in case of Pre bearing and bearing orchards, the availability of Sunlight is the most important factor which decides the selection of crops for intercropping. The intercrops can be classified into two groups one that requires plenty of Sunlight and cannot perform well under shade and the second group of the crops which perform well even in case of availability of diffused sunlight under canopy of fruit plants. In pre bearing orchard plenty of space is available that permits sunlight to come down and be available to inter crops for photosynthesis, so any crop can be cultivated as intercrops in pre bearing orchards if otherwise those crops are compatible with orchard fruit plants whereas in bearing orchard the canopy of fruit plant is well developed and interferes the penetration of sunlight down ward therefore only those crops which can survive and perform well under shade of canopy should be selected for intercropping. The crops which need less sunlight are Ginger, Turmeric and elephant foot. These crops can be cultivated in bearing orchards as intercrop.

Can I use plastic mulching for areca plants to reduce watering?

Mulching reduces the loss of soil moisture by reducing evaporation from soil. The reduction in evaporation reduce watering to plants. Plastic mulching can be used to reduce watering in areca plants. The degradable and non degradable two types of plastic mulches are available in the market. Degradable plastic mulch is costly but better than non degradable because it decomposes easily in the soil and cause no soil pollution.
